Boar’s Head Meats Linked to Listeria Outbreak

Boar’s Head is at the center of a nationwide Listeria outbreak that has sickened many consumers and led to 9 reported deaths.

Listeria is a foodborne bacterial illness that can cause serious health problems. Those most at risk are older adults, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems.

Boar’s Head Recall 2024 Update

  • As of September 2024, 9 people have died and 57 have been hospitalized.
  • Many more have likely been affected, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
  • Boar’s Head has recalled over 7 million pounds of meat.
  • The products include Boar’s Head ready-to-eat liverwurst and deli meats.
  • At least 7 Boar’s Head lawsuits have been filed against the company.

The recalled products came from a Boar’s Head facility in Virginia. Earlier in the year, U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) inspectors found insects, mold, and mildew at the plant and filed 69 reports of “noncompliances.”

These reports highlight the company’s blatant disregard for food safety standards and the health of those who consume Boar’s Head products.

LawFirm.com works with attorneys who have decades of experience standing up to powerful companies like Boar’s Head and holding them accountable for the harm they’ve caused. See if they may be able to seek compensation on your behalf during a free case review.

Boar’s Head Recall List

The Boar’s Head meat recall includes 71 products sold under the Boar’s Head and Old Country brand names.

In July 2024, Boar’s Head recalled a ready-to-eat liverwurst product marketed as Boar’s Head Strassburger Brand. The company later expanded the Listeria recall to include dozens of products manufactured at its Virginia plant, including ham, bologna, and bacon.

The Boar’s Head recall list includes:

  • All Natural Chicken Sausage – Smoked Andouille
  • Beef Salami
  • BourbonRidge Uncured Smoked Ham
  • Bratwurst
  • Brown Sugar & Spice Off the Bone Ham
  • Gourmet Pepper Brand Ham
  • Italian Cappy Ham
  • Maple Glazed Roast Pork Loin
  • Old Country Brand All Natural Uncured Ham
  • Old Country Brand Canadian Style Bacon
  • Olive Terrine Loaf
  • Pork & Beef Bologna
  • Steakhouse Roasted Slab Bacon
  • Tavern Ham
  • Uncured Pork & Beef Frankfurters

This is not a complete list — dozens of other Boar’s Head meat products purchased before July 31, 2024, may be contaminated with Listeria.

“Products sold at the deli, especially those sliced or prepared at the deli, can be contaminated with Listeria. Listeria spreads easily among deli equipment, surfaces, hands, and food.”

— Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

Anyone who purchased a recalled Boar’s Head meat should throw it out or return it for a refund. The CDC also recommends that people who bought the recalled foods clean their refrigerators and containers to prevent cross-contamination.

If you’ve been harmed by a recalled Boar’s Head product, you may be entitled to compensation. Take the first step toward justice with a free case review.

Boar’s Head Listeria Recall Symptoms

Initially, Boar’s Head Listeria recall symptoms may mimic those associated with gastrointestinal illnesses, like an upset stomach or diarrhea. Over time, they may appear as neurological symptoms if the infection travels to the nervous system.

Symptoms of a Boar’s Head Listeria infection include:

  • Chills
  • Confusion
  • Convulsions
  • Diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Loss of balance
  • Muscle aches
  • Nausea
  • Stiff neck
  • Death

Listeria symptoms may appear several days after consuming contaminated food. However, in some cases, it can take up to 10 weeks for signs of the disease to present.

“Recent illnesses may not yet be reported as it usually takes 3 to 4 weeks to determine if a sick person is part of an outbreak. The true number of sick people in this outbreak is also likely higher than the number reported.”

– Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

While some people may recover without medical care, Listeria can be particularly dangerous — and even fatal — to adults 65 or older and those with weakened immune systems.

Listeria infections in pregnant women can result in miscarriages, stillbirths, and premature delivery.

Did you know?

Ashley Solberg, a Minnesota woman who consumed Boar’s Head deli meat when she was 35 weeks pregnant, has sued the company for negligence. Solberg says she was hospitalized for 6 days with a Listeria infection and treated with antibiotics to protect her unborn baby.

Can I File a Boar’s Head Recall Lawsuit?

You may qualify to file a Boar’s Head Listeria recall lawsuit if you or a loved one:

  • Consumed a recalled Boar’s Head deli meat
  • Suffered a serious health problem as a result

A severe Listeria infection can spread from the gastrointestinal tract to the bloodstream or brain, leading to life-threatening conditions like sepsis, meningitis, or encephalitis.

Money from a Boar’s Head lawsuit can help pay for your medical expenses, pain and suffering, and more. If a loved one has passed away from a Listeria infection, compensation from a Boar’s Head wrongful death lawsuit can help cover their funeral and burial costs.
